Grandpa has been fighting Melanoma skin cancer for over a year now. It finally spread to the inside of his body.
He collapsed three weeks ago and laid on the floor of his apartment for two days. Mom kept calling but didn’t get any answer.
Uncle DD finally was able to get the sheriff to open the door to his apartment. He was unable to get up. They took him to the hospital and got some fluids back into him. He was starting to make a come back and get stronger.
The scans of his body showed that he had brain tumors and the cancer spread to his lungs, liver and stomach. He was only in the hospital for two weeks before he died.
Grandpa never stopped telling jokes and giving the nurses a hard time. He was never really in any pain, and they didn’t give him any pain medicine until the final hours.
Last weekend he seemed to be doing the best ever in a long time.
I sat with him till 9:00 pm Friday. We sat and talked and watched the news, and a few other shows on TV. Grandpa’s mind seemed to be the clearest it has been in a long time.
I kept covering his feet and tucking him in. Every time he would get comfortable the nurses would come in a check his blood. He just couldn’t get warm that night.
Grandpa got a good laugh when I started giving him a hard time about the three young nurses giving him a sponge bath.
When the nurses asked if they could give him a hug he said they might not want to let go if they did.
Dick called me about 6:00 PM and tried to tell me that it didn’t look good for grandpa. I think he was getting me ready for what he knew was coming pretty soon. When I was driving home from class around 9:20 PM he said that grandpa had died about 9:00 PM. He said that him, mom, Jan, Roy, and Sammy where there when he passed.
The preacher from his church had visited him earlier that morning and said a prayer with him. I’m sure that helped him feel better.
One thing is for sure, Grandpa always had a joke to tell you and he always tried to lighten up any situation with a little humor or just being aunery.
Here are some pictures from the last few months.
